What is BIG?

Why Blacks in Government (BIG)?

That's the first question many people ask. The best answer is to look at it another way:

Why not BIG?

Blacks In Government (BIG) is a national grass roots organization that promotes and supports the well-being, education, and professional development of African Americans in the Federal, State, County and municipal sectors. BIG is a national response to the need for African Americans in public service to organize around issues of mutual concern and to use their collective strength to confront workplace and community problems. BIG's goals essentially are to promote Equity in all aspects of American life, Excllence in public service, and Opportunity for all Americans.

BIG Objectives

  • To establish and maintain programs and activities which provide education and training for career development and advancement.
  • To work toward the realization of equal opportunity and the elimination of all vestiges of racism and discrimination.
  • To make positive contributions toward the socioeconomic, political and cultural well-being of Black people.
  • To encourage pride and motivation in Blacks for the achievement of full potential and recognition of excellence in performance.

BIG Perspective

BIG was organized in 1975 by Black Federal employees in the then Department of Health, Education and Welfare at the Parklawn Building in Rockville, Maryland. It soon became obvious that the problems identified were government-wide and in 1976, BIG was incorporated as a national organization of government employees at the Federal, State and local government levels. Since then BIG has established more than 250 chapters in 11 regions covering the country from Alaska to Florida.

What can BIG do for me?

BIG functions as a professional development association, an advocacy organization, an employee support group, and community service resource. As a BIG member, you become part of a national organization focused on your needs and concerns. Personal and Professional Benefits include the following:
